Proverbs For Performers: Rooting Out Envy*
Wrath is cruel and anger a torrent,
But who is able to stand before jealousy?
Proverbs 27:4 (NKJV)**
Envy is rottenness to the bones.
Proverbs 14:30 (NKJV)
For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.
James 3:16 (NKJV)
Proverbs 27:4 seems to say that as bad as anger and wrath may be, jealousy is a more destructive force. Consider one scholar's explanation:

'Envy is worse...
1) Because it is more unjust and unreasonable, as not being caused by any provocation, as wrath and anger are; but proceeding from mere malignity of mind, whereby a man is grieved for another man's happiness, in which he ought to rejoice;
2) Because it is more deeply rooted and implacable, whereas the other passions are commonly allayed; and,
3) Because it is more secret and undiscernible, and therefore the mischievous effects of it are hardly avoidable' (Benson Commentary on Proverbs 27:4).**

In other words, envy is an unseen, undeserved, devious, deeply-rooted and rotten-to-the-core malevolence. Blows from unknown assailants hit men hard.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: Pray on the armor of God daily. The Lord's invisible protection covers you against envy's attacks. Because 'The spirit of jealousy' (Numbers 5:30, NKJV) is a demon best fought by the Lord.

At the same time, don't become jealous of the talent, beauty or success you witness in other performers. If you're tempted to comparisons and your heart gets this greenish sickness, cast down evil imaginations with the Word and power of God.

Recall what Jesus said to Peter, when Peter attempted to compare his future path to John's future path: 'What is that to you? You follow Me' (John 21:22, NKJV). Jesus pulled the root before it grew.

NOTE: This is a republished edit of a 2016 devotion series, 'Proverbs For Performers.' You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Every disciple in every field performs for Christ. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players.' Mostly true. But you're not 'merely players.' You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
