Psalm 37: Hearing From Heaven (Part 3)
Evil Actions: God's Reactions
They shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb... For evildoers shall be cut off.
Psalm 37:2,9 (NKJV)
The Lord laughs at him, for He sees that his day is coming... Their sword shall enter their own heart, and their bows shall be broken... For the arms of the wicked shall be broken.
Psalm 37:13,15,17 (NKJV)
The wicked shall perish; And the enemies of the Lord, like the splendor of the meadows, shall vanish. Into smoke they shall vanish away... Those cursed by Him shall be cut off... The descendants of the wicked shall be cut off... The transgressors shall be destroyed together; The future of the wicked shall be cut off.
Psalm 37:20,22,28,38 (NKJV)
Without a doubt, God hates evil. But He is also 'Gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy' (Psalm 103:8). He is patient toward evil in ways we cannot understand.
He 'Is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance' (2 Peter 3:9).
Because He 'Desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth' (1 Timothy 2:4). Before Jesus, John the Baptist went straight to the public with an unprecedented casting call: 'Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand' (Matthew 3:2).
Once done, the Director stepped in to narrow the search: 'I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance' (Luke 5:32). He sought those who were poor, brokenhearted, captive, blind and heavy-laden. His plan? 'To set at liberty those who are oppressed' (Luke 4:18).
He sought them then. He seeks them now. Some have made serious mistakes (like Zaccheus, the corrupt tax collector). But deep down, they hope for a new start. Actors, models and talent for Christ: you carry the Key to their freedom.
Without repentance, Psalm 37 reveals (and repeats) a dire fate for evildoers. They will be 'Cut down' and 'Cut off.' But maybe, just maybe, God will work through you to give them a better cut: freedom--as in 'Break every chain, break every chain, break every chain.' *
In the meantime, believe in God's justice. Believe in God's timing, but never believe in the splendor of evil--because it will vanish in a puff of smoke.
'Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart' (Galatians 6:7-9).
