Psalm 37: Hearing From Heaven (Part 5)
Good Refusals: Fret and Envy
Do not fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of the workers of iniquity... Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass... Do not fret--it only causes harm.
Psalm 37:1,7-8 (NKJV)
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7 (NKJV)
Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
1 Peter 5:7 (NKJV)
If 'Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression' (Proverbs 12:25), if 'Envy rots the bones' (Proverbs 14:30), then fret and envy are deadly company. Refuse to entertain them. Give them no place.
1) Refuse fret. 'Do not fret' stands at the starting Line of Psalm 37. You must cross It to run in God's race. You will face it again and again, because fret is worry. It's 'Torment, corrosion and gnawing' (Random House Dictionary). Fret is a tumor that torments the brain. Fret is a poison that corrodes the heart. Fret is an ulcer that gnaws at your peace. 'It only causes harm.If you face an impossible challenge, refer it to God. Ask His help, and 'It will be given to you' (Matthew 7:7) - -because God loves impossible missions. When His heroes run toward the Goliaths of their lives in a public show of faith, bullies will fall. Even if your faith is as small as a mustard seed, mountains will move. Because It is God Who makes them move. Success follows.
2) Refuse envy: 'Who is able to stand before envy?' (Proverbs 27:4)... 'Which is secret in a man's heart, and privately contrives and works the ruin of another, and against which there is no guarding. All mankind in Adam fell before the envy of Satan; for it was through the envy of the devil that sin and death came into the world' (Gill's Exposition of the Bible).
Envy is 'As cruel as the grave; Its flames are flames of fire, a most vehement flame' (Song of Solomon 8:6). Like worry, envy is a sneaky demon. It pretends to help you--so you can become 'more' or 'better' than you are. 'If you just looked like... If you only had... you'd be popular, successful and happy.' Lie! Actors, models and talent for Christ: Only God is more and better. If you need transformation (who doesn't?), ask Him to do it. He's not a plastic surgeon, but the heart Surgeon. He's not a wealth advisor, but the wealth Creator. He's not a store owner, but the Storehouse.
Because everything else is fluff--destined to blow away. So remember: envy is the siren's song, and the entertainment industry has mastered it. Don't sing that tune--nor follow it. Instead, sing a different song: one of thankfulness... 'He has put a new song in my mouth--Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, and will trust in the Lord' (Psalm 40:3).
