Psalm 37: Hearing From Heaven (Part 9, Conclusion)
Your Great Commission
But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
He is their strength in the time of trouble.
And the Lord shall help them and deliver them;
He shall deliver them from the wicked,
And save them,
Because they trust in Him.
Psalm 37:39-40 (NKJV)
Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature.
Mark 16:15 (NKJV)
If Psalm 37 is about hearing from Heaven so we can ace our future hearing in Heaven (at the Judgment Seat of Christ), It's also about following God's Orders. Consider the reluctant prophet, Jonah.
He was sent by God to Nineveh, the chief city of Israel's chief enemy, Assyria. This idol-worshipping nation committed grievous crimes against Jonah's people. Understandably, he didn't want to go there. But God did not require Jonah's understanding--only his obedience.
Nevertheless, Jonah sailed in a different direction, faced a terrible storm, jumped into the sea, got swallowed by a fish, repented of his sin, and fulfilled God's commission. In response, the Ninevites listened to God--and were saved.
'But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry' (Jonah 4:1).
'The Lord replied, 'Is it right for you to be angry?... Should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left?' ' (Jonah 4:4,11).
Actors, models and talent for Christ: you have a great commission, too. Today, the most powerful emperor on earth is king media. Politicians and celebrities solicit his favor--because he rules the world. Idol worship is his official religion, and millions bow at his altars. But these altars will crumble, and their promises will fail.
Like Jonah, you have been ordered into enemy territory. It bears an innocent but intriguing name: Arts and Entertainment. Its chief cities are located in America, and confusion is the rule of the day. But your Rule comes from the Higher Source: God. His Instructions to you? They include faith--as in walk it; truth--as in bring it; hope--as in show it; and love--as in do it.
To some in the church, this seems very wrong. But like Jonah, you will go. Because this time, Jesus told you to go. Because countless people await an opportunity to hear from Heaven--and you are God's messengers. Even more, your news is very, very good.
'The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned' (Matthew 4:16).
