Rebels Without A Cause (Part 3)
Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft.
1 Samuel 15:23 (NKJV)
He practiced soothsaying, used witchcraft and sorcery, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger.
2 Chronicles 33:6 (NKJV)
Your merchants were the great men of the earth, for by your sorcery all the nations were deceived.
Revelation 18:23 (NKJV)
O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified?
Galatians 3:1 (NKJV)
God says 'Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft': a sobering comparison that surprised me. Bible scholar, Derek Prince, explains it:*

'Rebellion rejects God's legitimate authority... So if we don't have legitimate authority, illegitimate authority will replace the void. Where we have illegitimate authority, it has to be supported by wrongful power. The illegitimate power that supports rebellion is the power of witchcraft.'

'As for me and my house' (AMTC), 'we will serve the Lord' (Joshua 24:15). We are called to help God's talent move forward in the entertainment industry: to represent Him in a foreign culture, but not to be overcome by its temptations to rebellion.

Through Jesus, we learn how to 'Overcome evil with good' (Romans 12:21), how His 'Love never fails' (1 Corinthians 13:8), and how 'Mortality may be swallowed up by life' (2 Corinthians 5:4). Only the supernatural power of God makes these impossible victories possible.

But it's the supernatural power of Satan we must avoid. Media loves violence, s_x and magic. Vampires, werewolves, witches, wizards, ghosts, mediums and mentalists star on millions of screens daily.

Like Daniel in Babylon or Paul in Greece, we can thrive in Hollywood. Without betraying God, we can find common ground: 'To the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some' (1 Corinthians 9:22).

God gives us guidance, latitude and limits. He says when to go, yield and stop.

I see a stop sign at the intersection of Hollywood and the occult. Don't turn in that direction. The risk is great. Productions where good defeats evil (like the Chronicles of Narnia or Lord of the Rings) are in the safe zone. Productions where sorcery is glamorized are not.**

'Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness' (Isaiah 5:20). Because to God, supernatural power from any source but Him is rebellion.

The penalty for rebellion is separation from God. That was Satan's penalty. Witchcraft became his power. But that power is only a magic show upon which God's curtain will fall.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
