Self-Examination 2020: Mind, Out Of It
Let his mind be changed from that of a man and let a beast's mind be given to him, and let seven periods of time pass over him.
Daniel 4:16 (NASB)
They came to Jesus and observed the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the 'legion'; and they became frightened.
Mark 5:15 (NASB)
While Paul was saying this in his defense, Festus said in a loud voice, 'Paul, you are out of your mind! Your great learning is driving you mad.'
Acts 26:24 (NASB)
If we decide to believe the Bible, if we think God's Word still applies today...

Could the root of some mental illnesses be spiritual (with physical symptoms)--even if modern doctors disagree?

While my opinion isn't popular,* it is both biblical and personal. Mental illness was my family's blight, and perhaps a generational curse: depression, anxiety, insomnia, evil outbursts, panic attacks, nervous breakdowns and bipolar disorder.

Medical establishment solutions? Pills, shock treatments and counseling sessions. Their effectiveness to solve the problems? As most who endure such challenges know... if it works at all, it's temporary.

Actors, models and talent for Christ, consider two unusual thoughts others might label 'insanity':

1) Do any loved ones think you're crazy for entering a dirty business (which is how media is perceived)? Their opinions seem reasonable. But God's reason is higher than ours, as Jesus announced to everyone: sinners were His target audience.

'I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance' (Luke 5:32). Getting down and dirty was His way to lift the depressed to higher ground.

2) Maybe even devout believers think their minds (or the minds of their kin) are injured beyond the reach of God.** But I refuse to believe such thoughts, in spite of physical evidence.

'Jesus looked at them and said, 'With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible' ' (Matthew 19:26). 'Surely the Arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor His Ear too dull to hear' (Isaiah 59:1).

## Self-Examination 2020: Mind, Out Of It (Part 52)

* I realize my opinion flies in the face of modern medicine and the majority of modern Christendom. But upon personal and biblical study,** upon witnessing and experiencing the exorcism of demons, upon seeing the peace that follows the biblical solution practiced regularly by Jesus and His disciples, it is what I believe.

I am not asking or suggesting anyone join my belief. I am not asking or suggesting anyone abandon his or her current medical treatments. However, if you are a sold-out believer and medical solutions for mental illnesses (small or large) have proven ineffective time and again--for you or someone close to you, I suggest prayer, Bible study and counsel with deep-in-the-Spirit, mature Christians.

NOTE: This is a 2020 edit of a 2017 Shine Devotion series, 'Self-Examination.' You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players.' Mostly true. But you're not 'merely players.' You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
