Self-Examination 2020: The Fat Mirror
Woe is me, for I am undone!
Because I am a man of unclean lips,
And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips...
Isaiah 6:5 (NKJV)
O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God--through Jesus Christ our Lord!
Romans 7:24-25 (NKJV)
Most women desire to be attractive. Maybe it's built into our DNA. But the love of God must be much stronger. Because without Him husbanding our lives, we can be tossed like worn-out Barbie dolls--no matter how great we looked in the store.

Most men desire to be strong providers. Maybe it's part of their DNA, too. But their power and plenty can't match God's. Because without submitting to His Will, they're like tiny soldiers on a chess board--controlled by forces they don't understand.

Yet even saints can take cues from the world, forget about how the Lord treasures them, and look at themselves through Satan's lenses. Instead of appreciating God's work, their self-reflections are dark and twisted. What they see is a lie and not the truth.*

Actors, models and talent for Christ: Five of the best-known Bible heroes hated themselves and wanted to die.** They felt pain, despair and loneliness. They felt burned out and inadequate.

If you've been similarly depressed, hold on... because help is on the way. God will transform your circumstances, as surely as night will become day.

Here's the thing: You're beautiful to God.*** One more thing: You're powerful through God.

If Satan whispers anything else--or hands you a distorted mirror, deny his lies and shatter the glass.

Brush the shards from your shoes and move on.

NOTE: This is a 2020 edit of a 2017 Shine Devotion series, 'Self-Examination.' You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players.' Mostly true. But you're not 'merely players.' You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.

P.S. To read the other devotions in this series, please see the Self-Examination 2020 series.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
