Self-Examination 2021: Neck, Humbled
Then David said to the whole assembly, 'Praise the Lord your God.' So they all praised the Lord, the God of their fathers; they bowed down, prostrating themselves before the Lord and the king.
1 Chronicles 29:20 (NIV)
'But the nations that bring their necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him, I will let them remain in their own land,' says the Lord, 'and they shall till it and dwell in it.'
Jeremiah 27:11(NKJV)
His mother said to Him, 'Son, why have You treated us this way? Behold, Your father and I have been anxiously looking for You.' And He said to them, 'Why is it that you were looking for Me? Did you not know that I had to be in My Father's house?' But they did not understand the statement which He had made to them. And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and He continued in subjection to them.
Luke 2:48-51 (NASB)*
A humbled neck is bent in submission.

1) It is submitted to the Lord of Hosts in unashamed postures of reverence. It's not too stiff, too shy, or too frozen (on various people, places or things) to realize every breath comes from God.

Example: Abraham, David and the Lord's top men put God first - publicly and privately. Their lifestyles revealed their humility and utter dependence on Him alone.

2) It is submitted to earthly rulers in sometimes difficult nods of respect. It's not too angry or stuck looking back (toward men or governments better liked) to realize God allowed current kings.

Example: When Babylon destroyed Jerusalem, God instructed His people's obeisance. If they obeyed the new king, they would live and one day rule - when God deemed them ready.

3) It is submitted to human parents in all the decisions of growing up. It's not too cheeky or eager (moving toward exciting calls or strong desires) to realize the fifth Commandment's scope.*

Example: When young Jesus was a brilliant pre-teen wowing Jewish priests with His great wisdom, He returned to an unassuming life and waited 18 more years to step out.**

Actors, models and talent for Christ: You've been cast to model submission, and it's far from a popular part.

So if you bow your neck anyway (by acknowledging God to your fans, by refusing political gripes, by respecting your parents sans sass)...

Expect to see some stunned reactions. But truly, you aren't called to be 'normal'. You are called to become stunning stars.

NOTE: This is a 2021 edit of a 2017 Shine Devotion series, 'Self-Examination.' You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players.' Mostly true. But you're not 'merely players.' You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
