Self-Examination (Part 1)
The Need
Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you--unless indeed you fail the test?
2 Corinthians 13:5 (NASB)
Let us examine and probe our ways, and let us return to the Lord.
Lamentations 3:40 (NIV)
Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup.
1 Corinthians 11:28 (NIV)
For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly...
Romans 12:3 (NKJV)
For people who are honest with themselves, self-examination is a tough call. Seeing flaws in others is easier. Women can be pseudo psychologists: gossiping about the causes of sin, in pretenses of Christian compassion. Men can be bullies, sheriffs and judges: forming gangs of religious hypocrites, in pretenses of criminal round-ups.

In both cases, their own sins are ignored. Jesus asked, 'Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?' (Matthew 7:3).

Actors, models and talent for Christ: As friendships fracture without kindness, as muscles atrophy without use, as minds diminish without study, as hearts calcify without mercy, as talents tarnish without polish, as faith passes away without works, as people perish without vision... insight fails without introspection.

'They may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding' (Mark 4:12).

Because 'If your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness' (Matthew 6:23).

So while you're rising in media, don't limit self-examination to the fringes of your appearance. A much closer examination is mandatory for leading saints, since your actions matter most of all.
