Self-Examination (Part 12)
Eyes: Eye Strain
Our eyes failed, looking for help was useless; In our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save.
Lamentations 4:17 (NASB)
Because of this our heart is faint, because of these things our eyes are dim.
Lamentations 5:17 (NASB)
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
1 John 2:16 (NASB)
So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:18 (NIV)
For we walk by faith, not by sight.
2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV)
Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
Hebrews 11:1 (NIV)*
For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have?
Romans 8:24 (NIV)
In this millennium of talking screens, where computers become close companions, where talking happens via texts and tweets, where staring eyes replace moving bodies, our vision is stressed like never before.**
In walks of faith, strained eyes are a symptom of dependence on the physical world: a passing world not meant to sustain us. Because where people of God are concerned, our life support system is He alone, and faith without sight is our connector.
Actors, models and talent for Christ: Hollywood's all about the big show. Its film aren't designed to please skeptics. Instead they're designed to please dreamers, people looking for entertainment: a way to divert their attention from emptiness or unhappiness; a way to follow celebrities from a wondering, wandering life.
But that's okay. God allowed this time for His Own stars to rise as shepherds, standing in for the Unseen Shepherd. Because fans who can dream still have hope, and hope can become faith in the Lord... given the right opportunity.
Just don't let religion strain your eyes or stare too long at trivial things.
Actors, models and talent for Christ: I repeat Paul's powerful prayer:
'I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe' Ephesians 1:18-19).

* 'Jesus said to him, 'Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed' ' (John 20:29).
** 'Treatment for eye strain: 'While preventive measures, such as taking breaks from activities that cause eye strain are suggested, there are certain treatments which a person suffering from the condition can take to ease the pain or discomfort that the affliction causes. Perhaps the most effective of these is to remove all light sources from a room and allow the eyes to relax in darkness. Free of needing to focus, the eyes will naturally relax over time, and relieve the discomfort that comes with the strain' (Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_strain).
