Self-Examination (Part 19)
Ears: Too Much Noise
We are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming...
Ephesians 4:14 (NASB)
And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you...
2 Peter 2:3 (KJV)
After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle Whisper.
1 Kings 19:12 (NIV)
Clearly, God likes a loud celebration, and certainly, He enjoys a good beat. 'Make a joyful noise unto the Lord' (Psalm 100:1). 'So David and all the house of Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouting and the sound of the trumpet' (2 Samuel 6:15). 'Praise Him with clashing cymbals!' (Psalm 150:5).
However, God won't compete for airtime. 'The Breath of Life' (Genesis 2:7) has better things to do, so He lets His kids learn from their mistakes. If they won't tune out the world's programming and tune in to His life-sustaining Words, their ears may not receive His still, small Voice.*
And without receiving His Direction, we may find ourselves in rushing waters. So 'The prince of the power of the air' (Ephesians 2:2), via his media celebrities, is delighted to extend a hand up. But when we board his luxury liners, exciting sights and sounds overwhelm us. Our faith can hide in a cross on our necks.
Actors, models and talent for Christ: Entertainment is fascinating. That's okay, because God allowed it. You can rise through media's magic and un-charm its captive audience by the strength of the sound of the Truth. You enter the labor of others, so the Lord reaps where He did not sow. Your job is ordained and biblical.
Just don't let enemy programming fascinate or overwhelm your ears. How can you prevent it while you're there?
1. Put on the 'Helmet of Salvation' (Ephesians 6:17) for supernatural protection.**
2. Don't fill every waking hour with sound, via headphones, speakers or TV.
3. Make quiet time with God and His Word a habit you refuse to neglect.
