Self-Examination (Part 28)
Mouth: Your Fortune Teller
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
Proverbs 18:21 (NASB)
An evil man is ensnared by the transgression of his lips, but the righteous will escape from trouble.
Proverbs 12:13 (NASB)
The one who guards his mouth preserves his life; The one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.
Proverbs 13:3 (NASB)
For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.
Matthew 12:37 (NASB)
If God spoke the world into existence, if God's prophets spoke His plans into deeds, if Jesus is His Word that became Flesh, if He announces our ultimate fates, then the Mouth of the Lord tells our fortunes. But because the spoken word has power, even our words can predict our futures.
Actors, models and talent for Christ: Media is all about the word. The most profitable ad campaigns rely on memorable phrases. The most successful movies and shows are constructed on excellent scripts. A legendary songwriter won the Nobel Prize for Literature, although his voice is far from sublime.*
Speaking well is an essential part of industry advancement for stars, including future stars for the Lord. But some Christians take cues from the world (specifically from its ruler),** and they speak curses upon themselves and various people they don't like.
Therefore, consider the following:
1) Repeatedly throughout the Bible, God instructs us to keep our mouths closed unless we have something good to say. 'Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him' (Proverbs 29:20). 'Those who speak rashly will come to ruin' (Proverbs 13:3).
2) Condemning others is judging them, and we are strictly warned against it. 'There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One Who is able to save and to destroy; but who are you who judge your neighbor?' (James 4:12). 'Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged' (Matthew 7:1-2).
3) Condemning ourselves is harmful, too. Don't speak words of self-hatred aloud, as they agree with Satan, not God. 'If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness' (1 John 1:9). 'For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His Sight' (Ephesians 1:4).***
