Self-Examination (Part 41)
So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, and appointed them heads over you, leaders of thousands and of hundreds, of fifties and of tens, and officers for your tribes.
Deuteronomy 1:15 (NASB)
But I want you to know that the Head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the Head of Christ is God.
1 Corinthians 11:3 (NKJV)
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.
Romans 13:1-2 (NIV)
The United States of America, the land of the free and home of the brave, was established through open rebellion.* Does a generational legacy of bucking the bureaucracy tempt us? Because when we stop to think about it...
Citizens disdain elected rulers; men disagree with the laws of the land; women dislike men in authority; children disrespect parents and teachers; Christians disregard God's Word as their Boss; atheists despise all mentions of God.
But God ordains and allows hierarchies: earthly governments by rank and order, and He loves to elevate the humble: those who respect the role of submission; those who rule with kindness and compassion; those who don't fight for worldly leadership, but wait on the Lord for their promotion.
Actors, models and talent for Christ: Embrace the revolutionary concept of complete obedience. Consider why and how to do it:
1) Why? Christ modeled total submission: To His crucifixion on the Cross; to parents, priests and Roman rulers. Because His Father appointed them, and He trusted God to make things right. 'The last shall be first, and the first last' (Matthew 20:16).
2) How? Respect the rulers in your life: parents, teachers, bosses and agents; mayors, governors and presidents. You are not called to measure their worth. You are called to follow your Leader. 'Let all things be done decently and in order' (1 Corinthians 14:40).
To Be Continued...
* I am not condemning the American revolution. As God inspired Samson and Gideon to revolt, 'We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose' (Romans 8:28). Even so, Jesus exampled and counseled submission to our rulers.
