Self-Examination (Part 80)
Shoulders: Deadly Yokes
Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joy and gladness of heart, for the abundance of everything, therefore you shall serve your enemies, whom the Lord will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in need of everything; and He will put a yoke of iron on your neck until He has destroyed you.
Deuteronomy 28:47-48 (NKJV)*
Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
Matthew 18:6 (NKJV)**
If people might be compared to oxen, workers yoked for the plowing of life's fields, then we serve a master guiding our steps. Because left to our own limited views, we are little more than aimless roamers.

In 1979, Bob Dylan wrote a disturbing, Grammy-winning song: Gotta Serve Somebody, which ignited fans and critics in its bold assertions.*** It irked some fellow stars, like John Lennon, who wrote a mocking response: Serve Yourself. Shortly thereafter, Lennon was murdered.

Read lyrical excerpts from both songs:

Gotta Serve Somebody:

You may be an ambassador to England or France
You may like to gamble, you might like to dance
You may be the heavyweight champion of the world
You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls.

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You're gonna have to serve somebody,
It may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

(Bob Dylan, Christian, Nobel Laureate)

Serve Yourself:

You say you found Jesus Christ;
He's the only one.
You say you've found Buddha,
Sittin' in the sun.
You say you found Mohammed,
Facin' to the East.
You say you found Krishna,
Dancin' in the streets.
Well there's somethin' missing in this God Almighty stew,
And it's your mother, (your mother, don't forget your mother, lad.)
You got to serve yourself,
Ain't nobody gonna do it for you.
You got to serve yourself,
Ain't nobody gonna do it for you.

(John Lennon, famous Beatle, faith-mocker)

Actors, models and talent for Christ: Since every high achiever is yoked,**** avoid the deadly yokes of Satan. They include pride and harming children, by leading them in bad directions. Your duty is clear: Stay yoked to Christ and work the fields of entertainment.

*** Startling note about Bob Dylan's faith: After Dylan wrote 'Gotta Serve Somebody,' John Lennon's wrote a mocking rebuttal: 'Dylan's Christianity was unpopular with some fans and musicians. Shortly before his murder, John Lennon recorded 'Serve Yourself' in response to Dylan's 'Gotta Serve Somebody' ' (Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Dylan#Christian_period).

**** The impact of unyoked wanderers is destined to be small. But if God's people are also compared to sheep, then finding God's unyoked wanderers and carrying them home on your shoulders... is also one of your duties.
