Skeptics (Part 10)
The Professional Kind
O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding worldly and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called 'knowledge.'
1 Timothy 6:20 (NAS)
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
2 Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)
And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God. For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.
1 Corinthians 2:1-2 (NAS)
Generally speaking, professional skeptics are word bullies with a higher education, but not the highest education. Because the highest education comes straight from the Top. 'For One is your Teacher' (Matthew 23:8): 'The Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My Name, He will teach you all things' (John 14:26).
When Jesus was a Man, the best scholars in Israel tried to trip Him with words. Scribes, Pharisees, Sadducees and lawyers hoped to find an error in His Speech and expose Him as a fraud. But they couldn't.
'They were unable to catch Him in a saying in the presence of the people; and being amazed at His answer, they became silent' (Luke 20:26).
When I met my former husband in college, our first encounter was an argument. My best friend dated his roommate. They set us up like a couple of boxers in a ring: a prediction of things to come.
I was smart, but he was smarter. We got married, and I left school. He stayed in school and became a doctor. We had friends who loved nothing better 'Than telling or hearing something new' (Acts 17:21). I learned the hard way that debate is a game seldom won.
Even so, skilled debaters know how to draw blood with their words--especially when dueling with the unpracticed, less educated or poorly defended.
Actors, models and talent for Christ, avoid professional skeptics. 'Avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife' (2 Timothy 2:23)... 'For they are unprofitable and useless' (Titus 3:9). Avoid religious bullies--those who quote Scripture without 'Justice and mercy and faith' (Matthew 23:23).
First turn the other cheek; then turn the bigger cheek--and leave. God is your defense. Be about His business and He will be about yours--including the knockout punch for all bullies--especially those who hit with their words.
