Stage Names (Part 1)
Chip Off The Rock
And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this Rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
Matthew 16:18 (NKJV)
Wikipedia says, 'A stage name, also called a showbiz name or screen name, is a pseudonym used by performers and entertainers.'

William Shakespeare says, 'All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts' (As You Like It).

Jesus Christ says, 'I will write on him My new name' (Revelation 3:12).

Any way you look at it, our earthly names are temporary, because 'our citizenship is in Heaven' (Philippians 3:20). Performers understand stage names, and Shakespeare got it right: we are all actors. As such, names have significance--especially those given by God.

'Peter' was a stage name (a.k.a. 'Cephas'). 'Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, 'You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas' (which is translated, A Stone)' (John 1:42).

Peter's first major role was as understudy to Jesus Christ, The Rock.

'Therefore thus says the Lord God: 'Behold, I lay in Zion a Stone for a Foundation, a tried Stone, a precious Cornerstone, a sure Foundation' ' (Isaiah 28:16). 'That Rock was Christ' (1 Corinthians 10:4), and Peter became a 'Chip Off The Rock.'

And us? We 'Also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ' (1 Peter 2:5). Our spiritual sacrifices include our work: command performances in the field of Hollywood.

We are the building blocks of a roofless church laid on the airwaves of media.

Given this name, what are the star qualities of a stone?

1) Strength: 'My brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might' (Ephesians 6:10). Be strong to 'Uphold the weak' (1 Thessalonians 5:14).

2) Stability: 'Watch, stand fast in the faith' (1 Corinthians 16:13) as part of His 'unchangeable priesthood' (Hebrews 7:24).

3) Beauty: If you are made in the 'likeness of God' (Genesis 5:1), and God is 'Like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance' (Revelation 4:3), then you, too, are 'Precious stones' (Revelation 18:16): 'Children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation' (Philippians 2:15)--performing with clarity and brilliance.

Therein is stage name #1: Chip Off The Rock.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
