Success Strategies: Mercy
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.
Psalm 51:1 (NKJV)
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Matthew 5:7 (NKJV)
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
James 3:17-18 (NKJV)
Consider two popular billboards:

1) 'God prefers kind atheists over hateful Christians;'

2) 'I've got nothing against God. It's His fan club I can't stand.'

Consider a quote from Ghandi: 'I don't reject Christ. I love Christ. It's just that so many of you Christians are so unlike Christ.'

Hateful or judgmental Christians present a contradiction in terms. Because you can't be full of hate or judgment--and be full of Christ at the same time.

'If someone says, 'I love God,' and hates his brother, he is a liar' (1 John 4:20, NKJV). Even more, 'Mercy triumphs over judgment' (James 2:13, NKJV).

Personally speaking, I was deterred from Christ by hateful Christians--until a merciful God revealed Himself directly to me. But aren't we supposed to be His middle men, a.k.a. His Body?

So what is mercy and how does it pertain to us as the Body of Christ? Mercy is 'Compassionate or kindly forbearance shown toward an offender.' (Random House Dictionary).

Mercy is an act of love when it's hard to give it--when it's unusual or inconvenient. Like helping a stranger, an enemy or an obvious sinner. Mercy is giving love to someone who doesn't seem to deserve it. Like the adulteress facing her accusers.*

Mercy is a calling card for Christ. Every time you hand it out, you make the best possible connection and truly represent the Lord of mercy.

What if people don't appreciate your mercy? Most people WILL. Mercy is a life-saver. But even if they don't, God does. After all, His opinion of us is the only One that counts.

How does mercy relate to media? Don't hate the sinners. Don't judge them.** Because Jesus didn't. His only harsh Words were directed to the rule-driven 'religious' hypocrites of His day. Instead, give them mercy.

Because God promotes people like His Son, people of mercy. Therein mercy is a success strategy.

## Success Strategies: Mercy (Part 23)

* An adulteress faces the Light of the world:

** I advise you to avoid speaking the common Christian phrase: 'Love the sinner. Hate the sin.' Although it may be true in many circumstances, it is obviously condescending.

NOTE: This series is a republished edit of a 2013 devotion series called, 'Success Strategies.' You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you're not a performer, don't be deterred. In truth, every disciple acts for Christ, models Christ and stewards His talents.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
