Success Strategies: Nonconformity
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Romans 12:2 (NKJV)
Do not shape your lives by the cravings which used to dominate you...
1 Peter 1:14 (WNT)
But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same Image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.
2 Corinthians 3:18 (NKJV)
Mostly, Hollywood is into type casting. Roles are won by appearances.

Mostly, God is into off-type casting. Roles are won by the heart. He invented surprising stars and impossible endings. Surely, His direction is beyond human understanding.

But one thing is certain: God likes nonconformity. That is to say, He likes nonconformity to the world's standards, a.k.a. peer pressure. 'Do not be misled: 'Bad company corrupts good character' ' (1 Corinthians 15:33, NIV). 'For a companion of fools suffers harm' (Proverbs 13:20, NIV).

Hollywood likes nonconformity, too--at least the physical kind. If you act, sing or look like other performers, how will you stand out in an industry that craves the next new thing?

In media, the condition of your heart is of small importance. If anything, media kings prefer your heart to resemble their own.

Therefore, for an actor, model or talent for Christ to succeed in both realms (the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of entertainment), you need:

1) The courage to stand out from a crowd with the unique talents God gave you. To be the best among your peers is a start, but to rise above them as unique is your success.

2) The greater courage to stand up in a crowd for Jesus--and to lay your success, crowns and trophies at His Feet.

Because the greatest act of human nonconformity is godly conformity: to look and act like Jesus. How is this possible in a world of corruption? In our power, it isn't. In His power, all things are possible. Especially miraculous transformations.

If we seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, we will enjoy the fruits of a life well-lived--even in the business of entertainment.* Therein, nonconformity is a success strategy.

NOTE: This series is a republished edit of a 2013 devotion series called, 'Success Strategies.' You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you're not a performer, don't be deterred. In truth, every disciple acts for Christ, models Christ and stewards His talents.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
