Success Strategies: Persistence
The Parable of the Persistent Widow

Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, saying: 'There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man. Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, 'Get justice for me from my adversary.' And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, 'Though I do not fear God nor regard man, yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me...'

And shall God not avenge His Own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? I tell you that He will...'
Luke 18:1-8 (NKJV)
Both in the Kingdom of Heaven and the kingdoms of earth, persistence is rewarded. Even in Hollywood.

Giving up is the first fact of failure. It's not a lack of talent, because performers without remarkable talent can achieve remarkable success.

How can that be? Persistence! A dogged determination to succeed--especially against the odds... breaks walls, moves mountains and changes minds. Most Bible heroes followed this path--including Jesus.

In His ministry, Jesus healed selectively. One was the woman with an issue of blood.* She remained sick with a 12-year hemorrhage and had spent all her money on physicians--to no avail. She was considered unclean and not fit for fellowship. But she didn't give up.

Instead, she pushed through the crowd to touch the robe of Jesus. He seemed startled by her move, and we know she was healed instantly.

But why did Jesus stop everything to confront her? Surely to teach us. So this woman could share her story of persistence--and its result.

Similarly, actors, models and talent for Christ must be persistent. It's a must-have attitude in an industry of delays, disappointments and deals that aren't always fair or right.

Because success awaits those who don't give up. Who knows if a performer's big break was scheduled for the day after he left the field? Even though he may have spent years on the bench or in the minor leagues...

So remember: God promotes people of persistence. Therein, persistence is a success strategy.

*Woman with the issue of blood:

NOTE: This series is a republished edit of a 2013 devotion series called, 'Success Strategies.' You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you're not a performer, don't be deterred. In truth, every disciple acts for Christ, models Christ and stewards His talents.

P.S. To read the other devotions in this series, please see the Success Strategies series.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
