Superlatives! (Part 4)
See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell... It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
James 3:5-6,8 (NKJV)
Your enemies have opened their mouth against you; They hiss and gnash their teeth. They say, 'We have swallowed her up!'
Lamentations 2:16 (NKJV)
Bully is a superlative term that took a mean twist. Originally, it meant 'excellent, or a sweetheart...' as in 'Bravo! Bully for you,' or 'My bully boy.' Today, it means 'a person who hurts, persecutes or intimidates weaker people.' *
Satan specializes in word twists, because he is the author of confusion. For instance, President Theodore Roosevelt coined the expression, 'bully pulpit.' A bully pulpit is a position of power: the 'power of persuasion... to exhort, instruct or inspire' (Merriam Webster Dictionary). Back then, it was used for good.
Today, most see it as a platform of words that beat and badger. Because politicians (and even preachers) bought into bully's distorted definition--as did pathetic parents and cruel kids. God's intended leaders went from sweet hearts to poison darts--hissing like the serpent who sent them.
It's all about superlatives. Words have power. They must be used with caution. Because when bullies hurl destructive declarations like fiery arrows, the wound is immediate. The fire comes next--bringing torment to countless victims. They never knew a shield of faith could save them.
Actors, models and talent for Christ: God gave you a bully pulpit. Use it for its original purpose: to inspire. Media holds more power than any president, pope or pastor. Our enemy developed this communication technology--to hit billions of children right between the eyes.
But what the enemy intended for harm, 'God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive' (Genesis 50:20). So get busy. Multiply God's investment of talent in you. Expand His shield of faith to cover others.
Because 'Love covers a multitude of sins' (1 Peter 4:8). Because 'Love never fails' (1 Corinthians 13:8). Because the innocent need a Champion. Because you represent Him, and He gave you the talents to rise and shine on the bully pulpit of media. Because Jesus gave you His very Own crown.
Satan's bullies cannot harm you. You have no need to fight for yourself, but you have a great commission to fight for others.
