Surprising Christians (Part 2, Conclusion)
Walking In Love
Just then His disciples returned and were surprised to find Him talking with a woman.
John 4:27 (NIV)
Surprise Hollywood.

Do not condemn gays, sexy stars, other religions, or obvious sinners. 'Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned' (Luke 6:37). Hollywood expects our haughty eyes looking down long noses sitting on stiff necks, so... surprise them.

Rush to welcome prodigals. 'But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him' (Luke 15:20). Until they turn around, be patient. Never give up hope. They are closer to salvation than you think.

Go the extra mile on every audition and every job. Be excellent in the waiting room, the dressing room, the classroom, and any place you set your foot. 'And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two' (Matthew 5:41) Become 'ten times better' (Daniel 1:20) on stage and off.

Respect the infrastructure of Hollywood, no matter how strange, no matter how wrong it appears. 'Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's' (Matthew 22:21). You must live in this culture to bring life to it.

Become a consummate actor. 'To the Jews I became as a Jew, so that I might win Jews... to those who are without law, as without law, though not being without the law of God but under the law of Christ.... I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some' (1 Corinthians 9:20-22).

And if you get confused by church talk, rules, or judgments, go to the King. 'A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another' (John 13:34).

By walking in love, you will surprise those desperately seeking it. By being a surprising Christian, you may be just the one to welcome them home.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
