The Call To Overcome: Meaning?
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world--our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
1 John 5:4-5 (NKJV)
To overcome is 'to overpower or overwhelm' (Webster's New World Dictionary).
To overcome is 'to defeat another in competition' (American Heritage Dictionary).
To overcome is 'to surmount obstacles and objections' (Collins English Dictionary).
To overcome is 'to prevail in spite of adversity' (Your Dictionary).
To overcome is 'to gain the victory' (Random House Dictionary).

Without doubt, we live in evil times. Without faith, we can do nothing about it.

Because without faith, 'It is impossible to please God' (Hebrews 11:6, NIV). When God is not pleased with us, He does not regard our prayers. When God does not regard our prayers, we become naked and powerless.

When we become naked and powerless on the inside, it doesn't matter how we look on the outside. No matter how handsome. No matter how rich. No matter how famous, we are wide open to attack.

Without faith, we become prey for 'Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons' (Matthew 12:24, NASB). Because the ruler of the demons is also the lord of the flies.* But can people be reduced to flies? Can people be reduced to prey?

Without God, people are targets waiting to fall.

Without a knowledge of the Truth, people are innocent or ignorant of their condition--like the emperor in Hans Christian Andersen's story, 'The Emperor's New Clothes.' ** All too easily, uncovered people get stuck in a web of deceit.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: As Spirit-filled believers, you are people of faith. Faith is your foundation to overcome, overpower, overwhelm, defeat, surmount, prevail and gain the victory. For yourself? Not really. Jesus already won. You just have to believe it and act accordingly.

Your calling to overcome is for others.

* Beelzebub is from the Hebrew words, ba'al-z'bub, meaning 'lord of the flies' (Etymology Dictionary)

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
