The Call To Overcome (Part 2)
First Blood
But take heart! I have overcome the world.
John 16:33 (NIV)
He is not here; He has risen, just as He said.
Matthew 28:6 (NIV)
Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them.
Colossians 2:15 (NKJV)
When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men.
Ephesians 4:8 (NKJV)
When 'God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life' (John 3:16), Jesus became a Man on a mission: a mission of love (for us) and war (against Satan). Ironically, these two missions were one and the same.*

Because 'Hope does not disappoint' (Romans 5:5), because 'Strength is made perfect in weakness' (2 Corinthians 12:9), because 'Love never fails' (1 Corinthians 13:8), because 'Those who humble themselves will be exalted' (Luke 18:14)...

Because 'Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it' (John 1:5), Satan was stunned by this strategy. Pride blinded him to the Carpenter's battle plan. When Jesus said, 'I did not come to bring peace but a sword' (Matthew 10:34), where was His sword? How would it hit?

The enemy's defeat came by a stroke of inconceivable brilliance. As a sweet Southern lady might say, Jesus 'just loved him to death.' Without hands, words or weapons, the Lamb of God was victorious, and earth's biggest trial was won. The Lamb took a hit. But in hindsight, 'The accuser of our brethren' (Revelation 12:10) was the one who got nailed.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: in the war against terror, Jesus shed first Blood willingly--to save us eternally. His greatest gift to us was Himself: 'Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends' (John 15:13).

His love overcame Satan, and it overcame death for His friends--including us. What can we do in return? Spread His good news, make lots of friends, turn up the heat and continue the call to overcome.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
