The Chain Of Command (Part 10)
Husbands And Wives
But from the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.
Mark 10:6-9 (NKJV)
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her.
Ephesians 5:22-25 (NKJV)
We serve a God of perfect order. The brightest minds in our world cannot comprehend the complexities of the human body, much less the construction of our universe. Regarding the institution of marriage, most of us are mixed up. So we need to study.

On one hand, the Masterpiece we call The Bible is too deep for any man to grasp--though repeated attempts yield increasing 'Wisdom, stature, and favor with God and man' (Luke 2:52). On the other hand, the Bible is simple and pure in Its yes or no, do or do not, life or death choices.

For me to write a devotion on husbands and wives is for God to show His grace upon the unqualified, because I am divorced. After almost 30 years, my husband left the war zone of our marriage in search of peace. I do not blame him--nor even myself anymore. I am forgiven, and I learn.

Background: I was raised by a mom who was a celebrated activist, and I followed her as a feisty woman in business. I called the shots--at work and at home. The world thought I was good at it, and I thought so too... until God allowed me to break, and Jesus came to my rescue.

Many good books exist on godly marriage, so I confine this study to God's written chain of command on the subject: the husband heads the house. The wife is his treasured helpmate.

When roles are confused, a husband feels hog-tied watching his wife struggle with a runaway horse. Meanwhile, the children run free, following a beast named media.

No home can have two bosses. No government can have two presidents. No Heaven can have two gods. One must rule. In marriage, God says it's the man's job to lead and the woman's job to follow.

Part of a husband's job description is loving his wife better than himself, while the wife's job is to give him the respect he needs to prosper. That's the right order. I didn't invent it. I didn't do it. But it makes perfect sense.

Because God created it.

Excerpt: 'Millions of Americans think progress requires women's liberation-from men, from children, from society's constructs, from just about anything that makes women feel morally obligated to someone or something other than themselves. The saddest part of this misguided view of human nature is that it hasn't made women any happier. In fact, it has done just the opposite. According to a 2007 report from the National Bureau of Economic Research, 'As women have gained more freedom, more education, and more power, they have become less happy.' '
