The Church (Part 5: The Word)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
John 1:1-5 (NKJV)
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:14 (NKJV)
Jesus is the Word of God. Jesus is the Head of the church. Therefore, the church gets to know its Leader and learns to follow its Leader through His Word. 'The Mind of Christ' (1 Corinthians 2:16) is in His Book. For the American church, It is easily found but hardly followed.

Consider our world's top preachers; they are charming, eloquent, and funny. They publish thousands of books. Consider God's top preacher, Paul. He wasn't charming, eloquent, or funny. He published a few long letters.

He 'Did not come with excellence of speech' (1 Corinthians 2:1), but 'In weakness, in fear, and in much trembling' (v.3). And his preaching was 'Not with persuasive words of human wisdom' (v.4). Why? So that our 'Faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God' (v.5).

The gift of excellent speech is not a sin. Apparently Apollos had it, and he became a Spirit-filled preacher alongside Paul. But great preachers and the books they write must not upstage Jesus. I hear my brethren share excited words like, 'Have you read (insert televangelist's name) latest book? It's amazing!'

Unfortunately, I believe much of the American church is compromised. It has compromised itself in trying to get bigger, fancier, and better. It has made deals with the world in order to win its people and their money. In this process, it has watered down the Word of God. It has diluted Jesus.

But the oil of consecration cannot be diluted. It does not mix with water. It does not mix with the world. The Blood of Jesus is a sacred covenant. Therefore, the blood they are diluting is not His. He is not in the house. Therefore, it is not His church--although some of His people may be unwittingly present, lost within a diseased body.

God wants the American church healed, redirected, and refocused on Him, His Son, His Word, His purpose, and His cross. So that the 'Prince of the power of the air' (Ephesians 2:2) will have his airwaves used for a different purpose--God's purpose.

That the Lord may reap where He did not sow. It is the destiny of the American church to use these airwaves.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
