The Enemy's Game (Part 5)
Who We Face
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the Gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints...
Ephesians 6:10-18 (NKJV)
Here's the challenge in the Christians v. Media match: the entertainment industry is not our opponent. Nor its leaders in film, fashion, music and theater. Their star making prowess is simply a sign of our times.
Neither should we forget the role of our cousins, the Jews. God has given them talents to lead in these crucial fields. Their top spots in media are far from accidental. Perhaps to our mutual surprise, we're meant to unite.
In facing our enemy, we must know who he is not. He's not the bawdy actor showing off his raunchy side; he's not the worldly writer banging out profanity; he's not the network director chasing higher ratings; he's not even the advertiser making bad look good.
Paradoxically, these are the enemies we must love. Because they're flesh and blood people who might need to hear some Good News. Behind their troubling actions is a troubled human heart. Who knows if your appearance is what the Healer ordered?
Therefore, let Ephesians 6 be your Guide.* God says your enemy's invisible, but He is quite direct in naming names: 'The devil,' 'The wicked one,' 'Principalities... powers... the rulers of the darkness of this age... spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.'
