The Fashion Show
The Lord says, 'the women of Zion are haughty, walking along with outstretched necks, flirting with their eyes, strutting along with swaying hips...'
Isaiah 3:16 (NIV)
Do these heroes of ancient Israel sound like today's models in New York fashion week?

When the widow, Ruth, was told to go husband-hunting by her mother-in-law, Naomi, she was instructed: 'Put on your best clothes' (Ruth 3:3). Before Esther made a life and death plea to the king, she 'Put on her royal robes' (Esther 5:1). Before David went to the temple, he 'Washed and anointed himself, and changed his clothes' (2 Samuel 12:20).

God understands fashion, because He invented it. 'Great are the works of the Lord; they are studied by all who delight in them. Splendid and majestic is His work, and His righteousness endures forever. He has made His wonders to be remembered' (Psalm 111:2-4).

Animal lovers marvel at God's fashion show, from strutting peacocks to camouflage lizards, or silky mink coats to sharp porcupine quills. God's imaginative coverings are diverse, purposeful, and extraordinary.

But Adam and Eve walked naked. Why? They were covered in God's righteousness. They lived in perfect communion with Him and all of creation. Then, in slid a serpent named Satan who tempted them to want more--inviting arrogance, disobedience, and disaster. No longer covered in righteousness, Adam and Eve became ashamed. They were banished from Eden, and clothes became a necessity.

Over time, the necessity of dressing evolved into the luxury of dressing up, because creativity lives inside God's people. Designers emerged. So did models, but some of them are shadowed by narcissism, envy, pride, and seduction. Bundle it all up, and you have the good and bad of today's fashion industry.

Can 'Women adorn themselves in modest apparel' (1 Timothy 2:9) and still be top models?

Can 21st-century models and moguls wear clothes that are cool, clean, hip, and fun? Yes. Once again clothed with the righteousness of Christ, God's designers and fashionistas lead a new culture away from the serpent and toward the Lion. Dressing up will truly point up and fashion models will truly be role models. That's a fashion show fit for a King.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
