The Occult (Part 4)
So Saul died for his trespass which he committed against the Lord, because of the word of the Lord which he did not keep; and also because he asked counsel of a medium, making inquiry of it.
1 Chronicles 10:13 (NAS)
God hates the occult. Why? It is not innocent, no matter how media merchants dress it up. The power behind magic, mediums, and fortune telling is from Satan. The occult encourages people to forget God, their Creator, and Jesus, their Redeemer, for Satan, the deceiver.

Know this: Jesus said, 'Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by Himself' (John 5:19); again, 'I can of Myself do nothing' (John 5:30). If Jesus, the Man, had no power within Himself, neither do we. In the beginning, 'God formed man of dust' (Genesis 2:7). Isaiah says, 'We are the clay, and You our potter' (Isaiah 64:8).

Dust and clay can be molded into beauty, but it is God who gives men minds, talents, and personalities. Beyond that, all power comes from God or Satan: the Holy Spirit or satanic spirits. Recall Satan's words to Jesus in the desert: 'All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it' (Luke 4:6). Jesus refused the offer.

So must you. 'And when they say to you, 'Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter,' should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living?' (Isaiah 8:19). If you want supernatural power, answers, or guidance, seek God. Ask His Holy Spirit. To do otherwise invites Satan's dominion into your life.

When you open yourself to the occult, 'You have crossed an invisible border into the kingdom of Satan. Since that time, whether you know it or not, Satan has regarded you as one of his subjects. He considers he has a legal claim to you.' (Derek Prince, 'Blessings or Curses: You Can Choose', p.214).

'What fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial {that is Satan}?' (2 Corinthians 6:14-15). Followers of God and Jesus are called to make a clear choice:

'This day I call Heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live' (Deuteronomy 30:19).

According to God, nothing about the occult is innocent. Not Harry Potter. Not the Wizards of Waverly Place. Not Charmed. Not True Blood. The only blood that is true belongs to Jesus.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
