The Straight Up Word (Part 3)
The Spinners
Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'
Mark 7:6-7 (NKJV)
There are some who trouble you and want to pervert the Gospel of Christ.
Galatians 1:7 (NKJV)
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the Truth, and be turned aside to fables.
2 Timothy 4:3-4 (NKJV)
The Word of God is not a coffee bar. The Word of God is not pizza dough. The Word of God is not a record spun by a disc jockey. The Word of God is not a novel called 'Crime and Punishment.' The Word of God is not a self-help book. The Word of God is not to be spun by any human hand or mind.

Where the Truth is concerned, God is not a spinner. He did not spin His Son. But He did spend His Son--for us: 'For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life' (John 3:16).

I present my greatest fear for Christians in the United States--as opposed to 139 nations where Christians are harassed and persecuted:* Many do not drink the straight up Word of God. Instead, we prefer It homogenized, processed and sweetened.

We prefer teachers to the Teacher. But Jesus warned us: 'Do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ' (Matthew 23:10). Yes, most Christian teachers pay lip service to God, and they know enough Scriptures to back up their points of view.

Example: 'I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.' John 10:10 is a favorite of prosperity preachers, but this Scripture falls in the middle of thirty Verses about Jesus as our Shepherd and us as His sheep. How many wealth-accumulating sheep do you know?

But for even the best teachers, their points of view can never match God's. ' 'For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,' says the Lord. 'For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts' ' (Isaiah 55:8-9).

If we spend most of our time with various Christian authors/teachers/preachers, what about the One Teacher, the One Author and the One Preacher we need to know intimately? What about His Word? How many of us start our day with the straight up Word of God?

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
