Now it came to pass when Samuel was old that he made his sons judges over Israel... But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice.
To Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. And Nadab and Abihu died when they offered profane fire before the Lord.
Now in all Israel there was no one who was praised as much as Absalom for his good looks. From the sole of his foot to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.
Even from the best families, sons fall. Even when they are raised to love God, sons fall. Even after standing in the Presence of God, angels fell.
If falling away from the Word can happen to the sons of Samuel the prophet, Aaron the priest, David the king and angels of the Most High God in Heaven, it can happen to us. And it has.
Don't be fooled by the ACLU. Our founding fathers were committed Christians.* So was Abraham Lincoln. Consider his address commemorating Thanksgiving as a national holiday in 1863:
'I... fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.' **
Did we restore peace, harmony, tranquility and union? If so, how far has America fallen? Within the 111th U.S. Congress, over 88% of our legislators professed to be Christians, but did they act like it? Admittedly, finding an honest politician is like finding a rare jewel. What about our preachers?
Shouldn't they be acting in the faith of our founding fathers? Maybe, but the Bible shows how sons from the best families can fall. Being 'Hardened by the deceitfulness of sin' (Hebrews 3:13) is one easy step after another: a small boast here, a little greed there--and an indulgence every now and then... begets the falling of a son.
