Valiant! Like David: Charity
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
1 Corinthians 13:1-3 (KJV)*
Now David said, 'Is there still anyone who is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake?'
2 Samuel 9:1 (NKJV)
The New Testament was written in Greek, but most of us read It in English. Here's the problem: we have one word for love, and the Greeks have many. Consider four: 1) phileo: brotherly love, friendship; 2) eros: romantic love, lust; 3) storge: motherly love, family; and 4) agape: non-conditional, self-sacrificing love--as in the way Jesus loves us.**
Depending on the translator, agape love appears 116-259 times in the New Testament. The KJV of the Bible attempts to make a distinction by using the word, charity, in its place. So I use charity in this devotion, as in King David felt it and lived it.
The dictionary defines charity as 'generous actions or donations; something given to a person in need' (Random House). Let's broaden this definition of charity to mean love that expects nothing in return.
Following the death of Saul and Jonathan, David showed charity to Mephibosheth, Jonathan's crippled son. Although Saul made David his enemy, David made Mephibosheth his friend. David replaced hatred with love--expecting nothing in return.
Actors, models and talent for Christ: by the power of the Holy Spirit, give charity (agape love) to everyone in the entertainment industry--especially those who don't seem to deserve it. Because we don't deserve it either, and Jesus gave it to us anyway.

NOTE: This series is a republished edit of a 2014 series called, Valiant Like David. In these devotions, you may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' I have not changed this designation. Because in a greater sense, every disciple of Christ acts for Christ, models Christ and stewards His talents, from which God expects a profit.
P.S. To read the other devotions in this series, please see the Valiant! Like David series.
