Then David and all Israel played music before God with all their might, with singing, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on cymbals, and with trumpets.
And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! For He has done marvelous things.
Surely, David was a man of many talents. As an artist, he was a handsome model, skilled actor, bold dancer and brilliant writer. But music was his passion. Within the realm of song, David was a singer, composer, lyricist, musician, director and inventor of musical instruments.*
If 'Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God' (Romans 10:17), then David's passion brought God's people to a new level of faith. Because music moves us. The direction we go depends on the driver, and David was one of the best. He led his nation into a beautiful harmony with its Creator.
In the Bible, music moved saints to worship, men to war, losers to victory, captives to celebration, workers to rest, mourners to reflection, idlers to arousal, madmen to peace and sinners to repentance.
Because God's tunes build His people note by note.
But when played for the enemy, God's music becomes a wrecking ball--breaking Satan's devilish constructions: the lies, chains and walls with which he binds us.
Consider: before Heaven's rebellion, Satan was Lucifer: a master of melody. He knew the power of music then, and he knows it now. Tragically, his tune is no longer enlightening, but deceiving. If God's music is real gold, Satan's sounds are fool's gold.
Actors, models and talent for Christ: some of you are called to God's Gospel Choir, currently in rehearsal on earth. It's diverse, ranging from spoken word to rap, from contemporary Christian to country, from classic hymns to popular hits--jumping over charts that divide God's people.
If you're called to mainstream media, keep one ear tuned to God's station--because worldly channels carry static. Stay in fellowship with other believers. Your brothers and sisters in Christ will help you keep your head clear--to hear Him first.
Stay encouraged. You're needed on every airwave, because media has magnified music. So stay the course--and sing God's Heart out with resounding joy.
