Valiant! Like David (Part 13)
David therefore departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. So when his brothers and all his father's house heard it, they went down there to him. And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him.
1 Samuel 22:1-2 (NKJV)
As King Saul became a rage-driven madman, David became a cave-dwelling fugitive. Israel's beloved hero lost his position, his popularity--and even his wife. David lost everything but God. King Saul had everything but God. Therefore, King Saul had nothing... and David would gain more than he lost, beginning with a new band of followers. The world called them misfits.

So David became a misfit--to bring them acceptance. He became brokenhearted--to bring them healing. He became poor--to bring them wealth. He became oppressed--to bring them freedom. He became an outcast--to bring them home.

David began the job Jesus would finish: 'The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed' (Luke 4:18).

Actors, models and talent for Christ: 'God sets the solitary in families' (Psalm 68:6). As His shepherds, seek the strays and embrace them. As His fisherman, catch the lonely and join them. As His warriors, defend the weak and strengthen them.

As His Hands, lift the fallen. As His feet, lead the lost. As His Voice, speak in love. As His disciples, offer His acceptance.

Because God 'Loves the stranger, giving him food and clothing' (Deuteronomy 10:18). The best Food is 'The Bread of Life' (John 6:35). The best clothing is the 'Robe of righteousness' (Isaiah 61:10).

As His church, you carry both.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
