Valiant! Like David (Part 20)
And David behaved wisely in all his ways, and the Lord was with him.
1 Samuel 18:14 (NKJV)
My lord is wise, according to the wisdom of the angel of God, to know everything that is in the earth.
2 Samuel 14:20 (NKJV)
Because David confessed his inadequacy, God made him complete. 'Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor. Surely every man walks about like a shadow; Surely they busy themselves in vain' (Psalm 39:5-6).
Because David confessed his simplicity, God made him wise. 'The Law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The Testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple' (Psalm 19:7). 'You, through Your Commandments, make me wiser than my enemies' (Psalm 119:98).
A fundamental principle runs the course of the Bible: 'He who humbles himself will be exalted' (Luke 14:11).
Actors, models and talent for Christ: In a show and tell industry where talk is big and words are many, be different. God doesn't like 'Great swelling words of emptiness' (2 Peter 2:18). Even more, big talkers are seldom big walkers. Compared to God, the wisest person on earth is foolish. So why brag?
Instead, seek God's wisdom: 'Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom... Wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy' (James 3:13,17).
Because David was a man of confession, let me confess, too. I have been arrogant. Unfortunately, the big A still pops up on occasion. When it does, I am not wise, but stupid. Lord, 'Turn Thou me, and I shall be turned' (Jeremiah 31:18). I repent. Help me stay repentant.
Actors, models and talent for Christ: I believe you are humble. Even so, if you need extra wisdom (who doesn't?), God offers it:
'If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, Who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him' (James 1:5). Let us ask often and receive freely. Can it be that simple? I believe so.
