Valiant! Like David (Part 44, conclusion)
The fame of David went out into all lands.
1 Chronicles 14:17 (NKJV)
Immediately His fame spread throughout all the region.
Mark 1:28 (NKJV)
Many Bible heroes are described as famous, including Jesus, Joshua, Mordecai, David, Solomon, Uzziah and the nation of Israel. Certainly, the purpose of fame for God's people is to 'Make known His deeds,' to 'Talk of all His wondrous works' (Psalm 105:1,2). Fame is good when it glorifies God.
Fame is bad when it glorifies anyone else. Early on, fame corrupted Satan, 'The seal of perfection' (Ezekiel 28:12). Later, fame corrupted Israel. 'Your fame went out among the nations... But you trusted in your own beauty, played the harlot because of your fame' (Ezekiel 16:14-15).
Today, fame has corrupted parts of God's church. 'The church's beauty lies in the righteousness of Christ imputed, to her; in the holiness of Christ reckoned unto her; in the Blood of Christ being upon her, by which she is washed and cleansed, justified and pardoned' (Gill's Exposition on Ezekiel 16:14). Fame does not belong to church leaders. Even so, many are worshipped as idols.
In the early church, when Cornelius fell down to worship Peter, 'Peter lifted him up, saying, 'Stand up; I myself am also a man' ' (Acts 10:26). When John fell down to worship an angel in Heaven, the angel said, 'See that you do not do that. For I am your fellow servant' (Revelation 22:9).
Actors, models and talent for Christ: your time has come.* You are flagged for fame. When you hold God's standard as a flag to the nations, you are bound to be noticed. When you reflect Christ's Image as a beacon, you are bound to be seen.
Fame is a game you must play. God calls you to the field of entertainment. So go. Millions of fans are lost. When they see you make a hit, they cheer for Christ. The screens in their hands can be used for good--if you are on them.
Even so, don't repeat the error of Satan, early Israel or church superstars. Don't believe your own hype. Getting hits is good. But in this game, you'll never get past third base without God's grace. So remember: 'God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble' (James 4:6).
Only believe Jesus--and give fame back to its rightful Owner: 'The Light of the world' (John 8:12).**
David was the man God used to unite His nation. Jesus was the Man God used to save the world. You are the stars God lifts to herald His return.
* 'Behold, at that time
I will deal with all who afflict you;
I will save the lame,
And gather those who were driven out;
I will appoint them for praise and fame
In every land where they were put to shame.
At that time I will bring you back,
Even at the time I gather you;
For I will give you fame and praise
Among all the peoples of the earth' (Zephaniah 3:19-20)
