2 Samuel 21:1 (NKJV)
Hear the voice of my supplications when I cry to You, when I lift up my hands toward Your holy sanctuary.
Psalm 28:2 (NKJV)
David had a very good habit; he inquired of the Lord--a lot. It's called supplication, which is from a Latin word, supplicare. It means 'to plead humbly.' From his story and his Psalms, we know David suffered. He suffered betrayals, depression and exile. He faced famine, foes and failure.

We know David made two big mistakes: loving Bathsheba and taking a census. Surely, he forgot to inquire of the Lord, and his punishments were severe. We know David repented, and God loved him immensely--building the city of Jerusalem, the nation of Israel and the dynasty of Jesus to come.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: supplication (to plead humbly) is an old custom--and you are a new people. 'Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new' (2 Corinthians 5:17).

I have seen in you a newness not born by my generation: a generation of idols and plastic. Somewhere between Jesus and now, we lost focus. Instead of inquiring of the Lord, we inquired of each other. Instead of carrying our cross, we wore a trinket.

Instead of pleading for His help, we demanded for our rights. Instead of exalting God, we exalted ourselves--and assigned to our Creator approximately 1-3 hours per week. But God doesn't work that way.

So imagine this: you are like David. God stays uppermost on your mind. Because you are and He does. When you're hit with problems or possibilities, you go straight to the Top. You might ask a few wise counselors. Even so, the last Word is God's... and whatever He tells you to do, you do.

Supplication is an old custom you have made new again. Because you are like David, described by God as 'A man after My Own Heart, who will do all My will' (Acts 13:22). How can you know God's will?

1) Ask Him--repeatedly; plead humbly. 2) Live in Him--by His Spirit and His Book. 3) Take the hard path. Following our King is not easy. 4) 'Test all things; hold fast what is good' (1 Thessalonians 5:21).

## Valiant Like David: Supplication (Part 10)

NOTE: This series is a republished edit of a 2014 series called, Valiant Like David. In these devotions, you may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' I have not changed this designation. Because in a greater sense, every disciple of Christ acts for Christ, models Christ and stewards His talents, from which God expects a profit.

P.S. To read the other devotions in this series, please see the Valiant! Like David series.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
